As a graduation gift for a son finishing his PhD , a woman asked me if I could do a special
painting of her son's lab including his rather technically advanced invention , something to
do with molecular physics . After looking at the photos of the machine , I explained to her
that there was only one way that I could approach this, and that would be to make it fun .
So we gathered as many personal memories of this school years, and with the help of his
fiance and other grad students , we took the rather cold and serious machine , and
surrounded it with private jokes, snacks, shirts , caps , books , crosswords, personal
photos , and favorite vacation spots . What we ended up with , was a lighthearted look at
